US Marshal from Mississippi, Killed While Serving Arrest Warrant in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. – A U.S. Marshal from Mississippi was shot and killed in Louisiana Tuesday while attempting to arrest a man wanted in connection with a double murder.

Investigators said Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells, of Jackson, was part of a team that had gone to arrest Jamie Croom for the murders of Sinica and Lechelle Williams, a brother and sister killed outside a lounge in Louisiana February 18.

In an exchange of gunfire, Wells, Croom and another deputy were shot.  All three were taken to the hospital, where doctors pronounced Wells dead.  The conditions of the other two were not immediately known.

A graduate of Jackson State University, Wells joined the U.S. Marshal Service in 2011.
