Wanted Rankin county man caught in Kansas

After nearly a week on the run, Alex Deaton of Rankin county has been taken into custody in Kansas.

Deaton was wanted for the murder of his girlfriend, Heather Robinson, who was found dead in her apartment last week. Just a few miles down the road, a jogger was shot. The victim pinpointed Deaton as the shooter.

Later that day, officials in Neshoba County said Deaton may have been linked to the murder of Brenda Pinter, who was found shot dead in her church in Dixon.

Sheriff Bryan Bailey confirmed the arrest Wednesday at a press conference, where more details of the arrest and investigation emerged.

Around 6:00 a.m. the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received a call from the Kiowa County Sheriff’s Department (KS) saying that they were following a stolen car being driven by Deaton.

Bailey said Deaton was arrested after the high-speed chase in Kansas. Police said Deaton went into a convenient store, demanded the clerks keys and then shot them before leaving in a stolen black Cadillac.

At 7:50 a.m. police attempted to stop Deaton on I-70 Eastbound.

“The stop strips were put out,” said Bailey. “as he was exiting a ramp. His car flipped, and caught on fire. He has since been taken into custody.”

The sheriff added that a partially charred 9mm was found in the car, and that the victim-witnesses in New Mexico confirmed that he also had a silver and black .38 revolver.

Bailey added that now Deaton must face crimes in Kansas and New Mexico as well as Mississippi.

“We’ll start the extradition process,” said Bailey. “We’ll also go get the victim’s (Heather Robinson’s) car to have for evidence.”
