What you Need to Know about West Nile Virus

Mississippians are still contracting West Nile Virus.

Four more people were infected over the weekend in Madison, Hinds, and Yazoo counties. Some symptoms of the virus include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes.

The infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis which leads to paralysis, coma, or even death.

How can you protect yourself, specifically in August and September? Stay away from areas with mosquitoes and remove all standing water from around your home. Also, be sure to wear repellent that contains DEET, and loose light colored clothing.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of West Nile Virus please see a health care provider immediately.
