Woman With Mississippi Ties Uses Make Up to Darken Up Her White Heritage

JACKSON, Miss. — A Belhaven University graduate, who is now an NAACP President in Washington, is accused of lying about her race.

Ruthanne Dolezal, who is white, says her daughter Rachel came to Mississippi after high school and eventually began wearing make-up so that she looks like an African-American.  “She knows it’s false but, I think she has told herself, as well as others, this erroneous identity of hers enough by now she may believe it more than she believes the truth,” she said.

Rachel Dolezal has maintained her father is African-American, but Ruthanne Dolezal’s husband, Larry said that’s not true; he is her real father.  “She was born Caucasian, he added.

When Rachel Dolezal was asked about the true identity of her father she said, “That’s a very, I mean, I don’t know what you are implying.”

Ruthanne and Larry Dolezal said their daughter graduated from Belhaven in 2000 and did some volunteer work with Voices of Calvary Ministries in Jackson.  They have not been in contact with her for several years because they didn’t believe she wanted others to see her with white parents.
