Nearly 70,000 pounds of Mississippi catfish has been recalled.

The recalled catfish is from Heartland Catfish Company out of Itta Bena, Mississippi. According to The Food Safety and Inspection Service & the USDA, it was discovered that 69,016 pounds of catfish were potentially “adulterated with a residue”. The residue has been identified as leucomalachite green, which is used to treat fungal and protozoal infections in the aquaculture industry. The chemical’s toxicity increases over time, and with increased exposure and concentration.

A news release from the FSIS stated that products from the company have been shipped to Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Texas and Vermont. A list of potentially affected products can be seen below:

The recall has received a “Class II” classification, which is defined as a “health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

The problem was discovered on March 8, 2018, after routine FSIS sampling results revealed violative levels of the chemical leucomalachite green in the products. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
