No Mississippi Players Taken in First Round of NFL Draft; Second Round Tonight

CHICAGO, Ill.- Players who played their college ball in the state of Mississippi continue to wait patiently to hear their names called. Some of the biggest names in the draft include Inside Linebacker Benardrick Mckinney out of Mississippi State, he was a second-team All-SEC selection, and ranked by many as the #1 inside linebacker in this entire draft class. McKinney is originally from Tunica. NFL.com describes him as “Tall, proportionally built inside linebacker with ability to play outside. Has thick, powerful legs. Good straight-line speed to chase. True take-on linebacker who can meet linemen head-on or beat them to the spot and leverage his gap with above average play strength.”

Then we have State defensive end Preston Smith, also a second-team all SEC pick. Many thought we would’ve seen Smith taken in the first round Thursday night, so when the end of the night came and Smith didn’t hear his name called, it’s assumed that he’ll get the call early tonight. NFL.com says he is “angular build with long arms. Has point-of-attack strength and doesn’t get pushed around. Plays with leverage against the run. Very sound wrap-up tackler who usually finishes the job.”

Ole Miss players we could see earlier in the Draft can be found in the defensive backfield, starting with Safety Cody Prewitt. Prewitt was the staple in the Landshark defense this past season, and a first team all SEC selection. He was even a second-team All American. Cody also had a combine-best 125 inch broad jump. Now, he was a little weak on the bench, only got it up 12 times. Cody’s projected to go in one of the middle rounds.

The other Rebel we may hear about soon is DB Senquez Golson, a uninanimous first-team all SEC selection, Golson led the conference with 10 interceptions last season.
