Bandit Run Ride shifts into gear in Tupelo

Telesouth Communications Inc.

Get ready for the Bandit Run Ride kicking off in Tupelo on Monday June 19, 2017.

It all started 40 years ago when Smokey and the Bandit raced from Texarkana to Atlanta GA in just 28 hours in the now iconic 1977 Special Edition Black and Gold Pontiac Trans Am.

Tupelo has become a part of the tradition this year with over 200 Pontiac Trans Ams and Firebirds coming to the Automobile museum.

“The Bandit Run Ride is a recreation of the Smokey and the Bandit iconic run,” said Executive Director of the Tupelo Automobile Museum Jane Spain. The museum was selected as an overnight stop for the run from Texarkana to Atlanta.

Spain said the drivers will spend the afternoon and evening in Tupelo.

“They’re encouraging anyone from our area who would like to join the tour all the way to Atlanta, there is still time and they can still register,” said Spain.

The Bandit Run is a week long traveling car event that encourages people to get their classic cars out on the open road. This is the 11th annual Bandit Run, the event began in 2007 when Restore A Muscle Car (RAMC) owner, Dave Hall,  and  Trans Am enthusiast David Hershey, decided to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film.
