Bank Robber May Not Be From North Mississippi, Car May Be Shot Up

The VIDEO is surveillance from the bank. The FBI and MBI hope you may recognize the car used.

TUPELO, Miss.–A black male with a unique accent, about six feet tall- that’s who Tupelo Police, the MBI and the FBI are looking for today after a Tupelo police officer was shot and killed trying to stop a hold-up at the South Gloster St. branch of Bancorp South Monday. Another officer was shot, but was expected to live.

The officer who died was ID’d as Cpl. Gale Stauffer, 38. The officer still in the hospital was not ID’d, but is 26 years old.

The robbery and shootout happened about 3:15 p.m. Since then, police have released surveillance footage showing the gunman and the getaway car.

You can see the video above of the car before the robbery. Police think it was likely a grey or dark-colored Chrysler 200 or Honda of some type. Police think it may have been a rental car and may have bullet holes from the shootout.

The man they are looking for may also have been shot, may be left-handed and was wearing khaki pants.

Police do not know if the perp is still in the Tupelo area.

If you have any info, you’re asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-773-TIPS. There is a reward of $100,000 for the right info that leads to an arrest.
