MADDEN, Miss.–You may have heard the name Doyle Wolverton. He’s well known for an extraordinary winning record with the Leake Academy girls basketball team. Last week, though, an incident on the court may have marred his winning reputation.
He’s accused of biting a player on the face during a time out.
“The deputy that took the report took a picture and there were bite marks consistent with a human,” said Greg Waggoner, sheriff of Leake County.
He said the incident happened at an away game in Marion County, but a report was filed when the parents took the girl to the hospital in Carthage once they got home.
Waggoner did not say whether charges had been filed.
He said the report filed in Leake County said the coach was apparently angry during the time out and was in the face of the girl. It escalated and the biting happened on the court.
Rumors about what happened began getting out late in the week and the sheriff confirmed the report Monday.
Wolverton holds national ranking in the top in the number of wins for high school girls basketball.
He was inducted into the Miss. Private Schools Coaches Hall of Fame in 2009.
He is a 37 year veteran of Leake Academy in Madden.
