Car Shortage, Trooper Shortage for the Highway Patrol

JACKSON, Miss.–You’re still being protected, but there’s a risk to the way the Miss. Highway Patrol is operating. Many worn out cars with more than 100,000 hard miles on them are still in service and there’s a shortage of troopers, too.

That’s what Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz told media Monday. He said there are 512 troopers right now, 138 short of what the department is allotted.

He also said the agency is short on cars.

That will have to be addressed by the governor and the legislature and he is working to do that, he said.  Santa Cruz also said they will attempt to put together a trooper school next year to get the number of officers up.
