Drowning in North Miss., Six and Ten-Year-Old Victims

COLUMBUS, Miss.–An ATV flipped into a creek in north Mississippi Sunday, leaving six-year-old Jacob Brown dead and his 10-year-old brother Justin still missing. A massive search was underway after the two brothers, their father and three others were riding the four-wheeler when it flipped.

Coroner Greg Merchant said an autopsy would be performed on the younger brother.

Authorities told media the group was crossing a spillway when the current in Luxipillila Creek got the best of their vehicle, turning it over and ejecting the riders. The other four managed to get to safety, but the two boys, who were not unfamiliar with the creek, were swept away.

That happened at 3 p.m. Jacob’s body was recovered at around 4.

While the creek is up to 12 feet deep in some places, authorities said it is not unusual for people to cross it with ATVs.
