The State Fire Marshall Mike Chaney has shut the doors of the Eudora Welty Library in Jackson until changes are made to ensure the safety of the public.

On Wednesday night Chaney’s office conducted an inspection of the location and found that the structure was not up to par when it comes to safety requirements by the department.

Marshall said in a letter to Jackson City Mayor Chokwe Lumumba that there were numerous fire code violations and hazardous life safety conditions found. The Library closed it’s doors at 5:00 Wednesday and will not be allowed to reopen until those standards are met.

There were concerns with combustible material being stored in boiler and mechanical rooms, defective sprinklers, improperly installed fire extinguishers, and even a lack of data sheets on chemicals in the facility.
