Flooding impacts could damage infrastructure

Extensive flooding brings massive issues. Homes are invaded with rising water, traffic is deterred, spillways are opened; but there is damage below the surface that may not be seen until the floodwaters have gone away.

“We won’t know the extent of the damage of this event until the waters recede,” said Morgan Miller with the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

With Mississippi’s infrastructure woes, flooding only adds to it.

“When these types of events occur, we see an increase of potholes, shoulder deterioration,” said Miller. “and our crews will be out to assess when it is safe to do so.”

Miller added that infrastructure issues can be fixed, but lives cannot be replaced.

“Always turn around, don’t drown,” said Miller. “What we want people do is just avoid flooded roadways.”
