Governor Phil Bryant has set Dec. 19 as the special election date for Senate District 49.

The seat recently became vacant when Gov. Bryant appointed former Senator Sean Tindell to the Mississippi Court of Appeals.

The qualifying deadline is Oct. 30. If no candidate receives a majority of votes on Dec. 19, a runoff will be held on Jan. 9, 2018.

District 49 encompasses parts of Harrison County.
