Greenwood Police Officer Fired Over Arrest of Lt. Governor Candidate

GREENWOOD, Miss.- An internal investigation into the April 7 arrest of activist and Lieutenant Governor candidate Jelani Barr has led to the termination of a Greenwood police officer. Lieutenant Randy Powell was fired on Friday.

Police Chief Ray Moore told the Greenwood Commonwealth that Powell violated several departmental policies. Barr was arrested by Powell while filming a traffic stop, charged with disorderly conduct and interfering with police business.

Barr posted a video to YouTube that he was more than compliant with the officers, did exactly what he was told, and was still arrested as he was walking away. The video showed many discrepancies between the incident and Powell’s account of the incident.

Powell has ten days to appeal to the Civil Service Commission.
