Same Sex Partners Get City Health Insurance, Alderman Goes Back on Word

Contributing Author: Chip Ward

STARKVILLE, Miss. – If you work for the city of Starkville, you will be able to include another person on your health insurance plan like your mom, your oldest child, or your long term boyfriend.

Last week, the Board of Alderman voted to amend the policy, to only extend the “plus one” coverage to couples who are legally married.  Mayor Parker Wiseman veto that move saying it would not cost the city any extra money. Tuesday, an attempt to override his veto fell short. Four aldermen voted for the veto, two voted against, and Alderman Lisa Wynn left City Hall and did not vote. Five votes were needed for an override.

Last Thursday Wynn said she would vote on WKBB’s radio show Today in the Golden Triangle.

“I will be prepared to actually vote, I will not recuse myself nor will I abstain this time.”

The new law takes effect October first.
