JACKSON- The Mississippi Department of Transportation has rescheduled the bridge repair for the bridge over Valley Street on I-20 Westbound for May 5 through May 8, instead of May 28 through 30.

The bridge repair was rescheduled due to the threat of bad weather.

The repairs are due to two trash fires that were set underneath the bridge, damaging the concrete.

“We depend on local governments to enforce vagrancy laws, but with everyone experiencing budget challenges, we’re all doing the best we can with what we have,” said MDOT Executive Director Melinda McGrath. “MDOT does not police vagrancy laws underneath bridges across the state, but when damage is done, it is our responsibility to fix it.”

The repair will cost around $313,000 and will be done by Gibson & Associates Inc.

DETOUR: For motorists trying to travel west on Interstate 20, take Interstate 55 north to Interstate 220 south to return to Interstate 20 westbound. If you miss the detour, turn around on McDowell Road back to Interstate 55 northbound to Interstate 220 south.

Warning signs will be places before on-ramps in the Jackson area and along Interstate 20 westbound. The message will scroll on all Dynamic Message Boards in the metro area.

Traffic will be shut down completely on the bridge, the repairs will take four to six hours initially. One crews have signed off on the repair the bridge will reopen and traffic can begin moving again.
