Merit-Based Paychecks Going to over 600 Lamar County Teachers

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi– Nearly 90 percent of teachers in Lamar County have qualified for an extra boost to the paycheck as part of Governor Phil Bryant’s program to incentivize teachers.

More than 600 Lamar County teachers got a little bonus on this paycheck for their hard work, reports the Mississippi Business Journal. Lamar county is one of only four school districts in the state to be participating in Governor Phil Bryant’s program to provide incentives to teachers by providing merit-based pay.

That was just the first round of the paychecks. Lamar County School District Human Resources Director Chris Wooten says the second round is tougher, and not as many people will get that check. Clarksdale, Rankin County, Lamar County and Gulfport schools are the only school districts in the pilot program.
