GULFPORT, Miss.–It’s all about keeping you safe during hurricane season. There may not be any storms churning out there in the Gulf today, but when a storm starts forming, these guys go into action. Meet them and some other interesting characters in these news briefs:

BEATING AND KIDNAPPING HIS GIRLFRIEND
Beating his girlfriend and keeping her prisoner in a house overnight last week. Those are charges against Timothy Lamont Leech of Columbus. The girlfriend had apparently been hit in the face, say deputies. Leech is still in jail.

VICKSBURG CITY WORKERS GET RAISE
If you make $35,000 or below and you’re a city employee in Vicksburg, you just got nearly a two percent raise. It’s one and a half percent if you make more. That raise will be on your next check.

NEWS MS SCAM ALERT
A News Mississippi Scam Alert: If you own a business and somebody tries to come in and cash a payroll check from Performance Contractors, call the police immediately. That’s been happening in Starkville and police there checked it out. That company doesn’t even print payroll checks. Now Gabriel Petty and Robert Earl Robertson of Starkville and Tommy Lamar Davis of Decatur, Georgia are wanted men for fooling two businesses and getting the cash.
