JACKSON, Miss.–You might want to take another look at your travel budget for Memorial Day. Mississippi’s gas prices have gone up and are likely to get even higher as problems with the gasoline industry drive pump prices up across the country.
The average in Mississippi is $3.25 per gallon of regular today. Compare that with the national average of $3.67 and it seems like the Magnolia State is doing better than some. But, with the nation-wide rise, Mississippi’s average is likely to be on the increase in the next week.
Oil analyst Trilby Lundberg, with the Lundberg Report, says it’s refineries causing problems.
“This time it is not crude oil doing the heavy lifting on changing the retail price of gasoline,” she said. “It’s downstream. It’s the refineries with issues, as refinery projects, some planned and some unplanned are getting resolved and marketers are trucking the product to areas that have been hit with shortage.”
Tucson, Arizona has the lowest price in the country today, at $3.18. There are still some places in the Magnolia State where you can pay that. The lowest in Mississippi is in Pearl, according to Gasbuddy.com, with $3.08.
