Seven-Year-Old Saves Family From Burning House

Marion County–Seven years old and a hero to his family. Jeremiah Mikell ran through his family’s burning home to rescue his mom and brother.

Police officers. Firefighters. Soldiers. That’s what comes to mind when you think of a hero; but for this Marion County family, they think of their very own 7 year-old Jeremiah.

It was nighttime and the family was asleep. When flames began to embrace the home, Jeremiah realized the fire was happening, jumped from bed and ran to wake his mom, Remila Mikell. Mikell tells WDAM how everything happened so quickly.

“I could hear his footsteps in the hall,” she says.

Jeremiah turned around before going to his mom’s room so he could wake his big brother. They both ran across the burning house to their mother’s room. By the time Remila was awake, the boys’ room, where they had just been, was completely taken over by flames.

Remila Mikell tells WDAM that her son stood still, watching as the flames took over and the firefighters fought for control.  She’s considering therapy for Jeremiah, “he’s just a blessing and I thank God for having him.”

The Mikells suffered a total loss. If you would like to help, you can make a donation at any Trustmark bank.
