Summer Food Service still available for students on summer break

For many students summer isn’t just about a break from the every day hustle and bustle of school work, it’s trying to find out where your next meal will be coming from.

The USDA Food Nutrition Services and the Mississippi Department of Education partner to administer the Summer Food Service program. The Mississippi Food Network sponsors sights that are able to provide children in need.

This year they were able to partner with 25 organizations and hope to provide at least 50,000 meals for students that would have been forced to go without if these programs did not exist.

The Mississippi Food Network primarily focuses on the 56 central counties in the state. The 25 sights are spread out through those counties.

“One thing we need is to raise awareness, finding a local feeding site in your area and showing up to help and just love on these kids,” said Catherine Montgomery with the Mississippi Food Network.

You can find out where the closest sight to you is by contacting the Mississippi Food Network. You can also sign up for updates by texting “FOOD” to 877877.
