The history of Easter; a quick recap

TeleSouth Communications inc.

Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ is considered the most important holiday in the Christian religion.

The origins of the name are unknown, though some claim it be derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of fertility and spring. The english version of the word is believed to have derived from a translation error from the term hebdomada alba, or white week.

The Easter week is comprised of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Resurrection Sunday.

Easter is a moving holiday in that it isn’t celebrated on a specific day. The holiday is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox. Easter can fall anytime between March 22 and April 25.
