The University of Southern Mississippi has been ranked among the top military-friendly research institutions. VIQTORY has ranked USM at No. 3 nationwide in its 2019-20 survey of Military Friendly® Schools. USM is also the highest-ranked college or university in Mississippi.

For the third straight year, USM has achieved gold status – the highest ranking handed out by VIQTORY, a service-disabled, veteran-owned business. Military Friendly® Schools are leading institutions that have earned the elite Military Friendly® designation.

The University supports student-veterans through its Center for Military Veterans, Service Members, and Families. Center Director Maj. Gen. (U.S. Army-ret.) Jeff Hammond says the lofty ranking serves to validate the hard work by all those affiliated with the center.

“We are proud to have achieved the prestigious and highly coveted Gold Rating for the third year in a row,” said Hammond. “We are honored to be among the top universities across the United States and clearly number one in the State of Mississippi in serving military veterans, service members and their families. We gratefully thank our student-veterans, USM staff, and faculty for their care and dedication in making USM the first choice for military students.”

In calculating its list of Military Friendly® Schools, VIQTORY measures how well a company’s or institution’s military recruiting program does in three primary areas:

  • Engages the prospective military student or employee in a recruiting environment.
  • Educates the military student or employee once he or she is part of the company or school.
  • Employs the military student or employee in meaningful employment.
