A Cure for Brain Cancer the Aim of a New 5K Event in Mississippi

MADISON, Miss.–The Head for the Cure 5K has never happened in Mississippi before. But the event sponsors say they’ve already raised over $30,000, and that’s more than half of the money they were hoping to see.

The event has traditionally been one of the largest 5Ks in Kansas City and is now in 17 cities across the country.

How it came to Mississippi? Matt Anthony, one of the event organizers said a group in the Jackson area was interested in having it here.

“It started with the energy of a group of people that were affected by the disease,” said Anthony. “And that group of folks in Jackson reached out to us. I made the trip down last fall and thought this is an amazing community of generous people who want to help.”

THE INTERVIEW

Anthony said the event will be surrounded with entertainment and food for the whole family.

“It’s a nice July summer morning. You folks are used to the heat, so that should be no problem.”

The event is 8 a.m. Saturday at the Madison HealthPlex, 501 Baptist Dr, Madison. You can pre-register, which will save you some cash, at Headforthecure.org.

The race is $40 on the day, $35 for pre-registration. There will be awards at 9:15.

Head for the Cure 5K is a family-oriented activity and a sanctioned run for serious runners.  Prizes awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, the top Masters (40+) male and female finishers and to multiple other age groups. Those who register in advance are guaranteed an official T-shirt.
