The Camp Shelby Shoot May Have Been No Shooting At All

CAMP SHELBY, Miss.–Two days in a row of what authorities thought were shots being fired near Camp Shelby in Perry County had law enforcement on edge, looking for someone they thought could be dangerous. Alfred Baria, the man they have in for questioning, may have just had a truck with a loud backfire.

They caught him Wednesday when he drove past the area where police were looking for clues and another loud sound, which sounded like a gunshot, was heard. They immediately pulled over Baria, who was in a truck that matched the description of the one they were looking for.

“Baria has been charged at this time with four misdemeanors,” said Perry County Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith at a press conference Wednesday afternoon, “disturbance of the peace of a person, and two felony possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.”

Baria, 61, was apparently the guy they had been looking for, but they didn’t find a gun in his truck.

“He has admitted to being the one driving the vehicle and has admitted to being in those locations,” said Smith.

Baria’s house was searched and that’s where they found two guns that he wasn’t supposed to have.

No shell casings were found where the shots were said to have been fired Tuesday.

So, was he trying to hurt or scare anybody or did his truck backfire at the wrong times? Smith and state authorities are trying to find the answers to those questions today.
