Nestle recalls Drumstick packs over listeria concerns

JACKSON, MISS– Nestle USA initiated a voluntary recall of Drumstick Club 16-count variety and 24-count vanilla packs due to health concerns over possible listeria contamination.

“The company received positive test results for Listeria monocytogenes (LM) from equipment contact surfaces from a location on the production line where these products are made,” the company said in a statement. “There have been no positive test results for LM present in the Drumstick cones themselves. The products impacted by the voluntary recall were put into distribution inadvertently. No illnesses have been reported to date; the company is initiating this recall as a precautionary action to avoid any potential for consumer illness.”

Officials with the company said the listeria was found during a “test and hold” inspection of the equipment, but that an error occurred in logging receipt of the test result and the Drumsticks were shipped.

“We’re now looking into reinforcing our checks and balances so that such errors do not reoccur. We’re also investigating the root cause of the finding,” said Nestle officials.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The products in question will have the UPC codes 72554-11096 and 72554-00160, with the “best by” dates marked as “15 June 2017” and “19 June 2017.”

Anyone with the recalled product is encouraged to return it the store from which you purchased it or contact the company.
