One Voice MS 6th Annual Progress Lunch Held in Capital City

JACKSON, Miss.–The One Voice MS 6th Annual Progress Luncheon was held Wednesday in Jackson at the Convention Center.

“It’s simply an opportunity to convene to talk about solutions to problems as opposed to problems as they currently exist,” said Derrick Johnson executive director of One Voice MS.

He says annually they bring together state leaders to talk about certain topics facing the African American community.

“We’ll have speakers on community development and best practices around school districts,” he said.

The keynote speaker on Wednesday was Stephen L. Hightower II chief operations officer for Hightower Petroleum Company.

“On a path to success there are a lot of struggles and the most important thing is that you don’t quit, work hard, and do the things you say you’ll do,” said Hightower during his speech.

He said the One Voice MS organization is a great outlet to bring people together for a common goal.

“The biggest thing is that we stay connected and we learn from each other,” said Hightower.  “If there’s one thing that’s working in one part of the state, then you could implement that in your local area.”
