  • We might set a record for the warmest Presidents Day in Mississippi history. The record in likely to be broken in a few communities with eyes on Greenwood, where the record high of 1997 (82 degrees) is ripe for a reset today.

 

  • Governor Bryant says he is willing to call a special legislative session on education, with a condition. First, lawmakers must reach agreement on the central planks of their proposal, which will likely include some recommendations by EdBuild.

 

  • Today’s autopsy will reveal more about what killed a 33 year old man found dead in his cell at the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility over the weekend. According to the MDOC, the death of Eric Heinz, who was serving a 20 year sentence for armed robbery and burglary followed a fight with his cellmate.

 

  • Amnesty is a beautiful word if your parking and traffic tickets in the capital city have been racking up penalties. Starting a week from today  through March 31st, the City of Jackson Municipal Court will be waiving warrant and administration fees on these violations.

 

  • The assisted living/continuing care retirement center of Saint Catherine’s Village in Madison is about to grow by around 55 thousand square feet. The 26 million dollar renovation will convert semi-private rooms at Saint Catherine’s Siena Center to private rooms for retirees.

 

  • Presidents Day factoid: It’s still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. George’s February 22 birthday was incorporated into what’s commonly called Presidents’ Day via 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
