A man who killed two nuns in 2016 has entered a court plea of guilty.

Rodney Earl Sanders plead guilty as part of an agreement that removed the possibility of the death penalty. Sanders will now spend life in prison without parole.

Family members of the victims said the decision takes into consideration the two sisters’ opposition to the death penalty.

Sisters Margaret Held and Paula Merrill worked as nurse practitioners and were found stabbed to death in their home in Durant after they didn’t show up for work.  The women served in the medical community through the Lexington Medical Clinic.
