PASCAGOULA, Miss.–Heavy rains on parts of the Mississippi Gulf Coast have left some residents displaced.
The Jackson County Emergency Management Agency has stayed busy over the last 48 hours keeping a watch on the situation.
“Our rivers are rising and they could get on or near flood stage in the next day or so,” said spokesman Jonathan Baum for the JCEMA.
He pointed to the Pascagoula River that is expected to continue to rise over the next two days because rain is still in the forecast Thursday and Friday.
Even without flood stage on the river, some residents have had to leave their homes.
“We’ve had a few evacuations, some roads closed, and right not at this time some minor damage,” said Baum.
Baum confirmed that seven people were in their flood victims’ shelter as of Thursday morning but many others were likely with family and friends since leaving their homes.
In total, reports have suggested around 60 people total have been moved but Baum did not have that information at the time of speaking to News Mississippi.
The National Weather Service said over half a foot of rain fell in the county on Wednesday.
