An investigation has been launched after two people were injured during an officer-involved shooting in Gulfport.
According to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, officers with the Gulfport Police Department responded to a Friday night call reporting an individual with a weapon at an apartment complex on Three Oaks Road. Upon arrival, officers located the subject and attempted to detain him at the scene.
“The subject resisted, fled, and tackled an armed individual,” DPS recounted in a release. “During the encounter, one officer and the armed individual discharged their firearms.”
Both the subject and the armed individual were struck and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. No officers sustained physical injuries during the incident.
No identities had been released as of Saturday morning. It remains unclear what led to the incident or what relationship, if any, exists between the subject and the armed individual. DPS said additional information may be provided at a later time.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has since taken over the case and will turn over findings to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation.
