An assault case in Amory has led officials to arrest a man who is believed to be responsible for a 2021 murder.
The Amory Police Department reports that officers responded to an assault on Hatley Rd. on Thursday. An unidentified female was alert, but in serious condition, according to authorities. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
An investigation into the assault resulted in 37-year-old Darcus Neely, who lived near the victim, being taken into custody. Detectives noticed several similarities between the assault that took place against the victim and the murder of 77-year-old Judy Baxter.
Baxter was killed in her home on 12th Avenue on August 12, 2021.
Neely is charged with capital murder for allegedly killing Baxter and attempted murder in the most recent incident. He will appear before a grand jury at a date later to be determined.
An investigation into both crimes is ongoing.
