Three Jackson police officers are on paid administrative leave after a man reportedly died in their custody.

Officials with the Jackson Police Department (JPD) stated that the officers responded to a call for service on Saturday around 7:30 p.m. at the 500 block of E. Beasley Road.

JPD is conducting an internal investigation and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has launched an independent investigation.

“While at the location, officers successfully took an individual into custody who experienced a medical emergency,” JPD stated in a release. “American Medical Response was summoned to the location to render aid; unfortunately, the individual was pronounced deceased on the scene.”

Officers James Land, Kenya McCarty, and Avery Willis are on leave pending the outcome of the internal investigation.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba released the following statement regarding the incident:

The loss of life is always tragic and we remain committed to transparency. At this time, we do not have any additional comment as we allow the investigation to continue.
