Four people have been arrested and charged in connection with a weekend shooting that left six dead and at least 10 injured in Leland.
The FBI Jackson Field Office announced in a Monday night news release the arrests of Teviyon L. Powell, 29; William Bryant, 29; Morgan Latimore, 25; and Latoya A. Powell, 44. Teviyon, Bryant, and Latimore were each charged with capital murder while Latoya was charged with attempted murder.
Other arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
Gunfire erupted at the intersection of Fourth Street and North Main Street around midnight Friday when a large crowd was gathered for a block party following the homecoming football game at Leland High School. Federal agents stated in Sunday night that the incident appears to have been “sparked by a disagreement among several individuals,” while posting pictures of four suspects unidentified at the time.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell, who oversees the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which is assisting in the case, confirmed those details to SuperTalk Mississippi News on Monday morning and called the shooting “very sad and deplorable” and a “senseless waste of life.”
The deceased were identified Saturday as Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; Kaslyn Johnson, 18, Amos Brantley, Jr., 18; and JaMichael Jones, 34.
The shooting in Leland was one of several, albeit unrelated, shootings that made for a deadly weekend across Mississippi.
Another shooting happened Friday night on the campus of Heidelberg High School after the school’s homecoming football game and resulted in two people, including an expectant mother, dying. Tylar Jarod Goodloe, 18, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of capital murder and possession of a deadly weapon on educational property. Damirin Starks, 19, was arrested Monday and charged with one count of accessory after the fact and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
The victims in Heidelberg were identified as Chris Newell, 35, and Mikeia McCray, 28. More arrests are expected in that case, as well, Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson told WDAM-TV.
On Saturday night, more gunfire boomed, this time on the campus of Alcorn State University in Lorman. When campus police officers responded to the scene inside the Industrial Technology Building, one person was found dead and two injured. The deceased has been identified as Brekyra Fisher, 29. No arrests had been announced in the case as of Monday night.
