On Friday, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reported 5,533 more cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi.

The latest report brings the state’s total number of cases to 717,666. With the confirmation of 25 additional deaths, 10,831 Mississippians have passed away from the virus. There are 300 ongoing outbreaks in long-term care facilities.

ICU beds in Mississippi continue to be scarce.

While more than 50 percent of residents are fully vaccinated, only 35 percent of those eligible have received a booster.

“Please know that boosters are really necessary to combat Omicron. We know from recent data that a booster is about 90 percent effective in preventing hospitalizations in Omicron,” State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said on Wednesday.
