Hinds County School District Superintendent Dr. Robert Sanders has announced that he will be stepping down from his post this coming summer.
Sanders, who took over the executive role with the district in 2023, said he believes it’s time for a change of leadership at the top. He confirmed that he will remain put until his contract expires on June 30, 2025, and will work to ensure a smooth transition of power.
In a letter penned to the Hinds County School Board, the superintendent issued the following statement:
It has been a tremendous honor to serve our students, educators, and community, and I am proud of the progress we have achieved together during my tenure.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the school board, our dedicated staff, and the families of Hinds County for their support and commitment to the success of our students.
While this decision was not an easy one, I believe it is the right time for new leadership to continue advancing the mission of providing a quality education to every child.
I remain fully committed to ensuring a smooth transition and to maintaining our focus on the success of our students during the remainder of my term. Thank you for the opportunity to serve this incredible community.”
Sanders has had a lengthy career in education, including stints as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and a member of the Hinds Community College Board of Trustees along with his most recent position.
Officials have not yet floated out any potential candidates to fill Sanders’ seat.
