After wrapping up the Christmas enforcement period, the Mississippi Highway Patrol will begin a new campaign as we gear up for the start of the new year.
In anticipation of an uptick in traffic on highways and interstates across Mississippi, a heightened presence of state troopers will be working to ensure traveler safety from Tuesday at 6 a.m. to Wednesday at 12 a.m.
Per a release from the Department of Public Safety, troopers will utilize high-visibility patrols and safety checkpoints to encourage cautious driving techniques and the use of occupant restraint systems, or seatbelts.
“As we approach the New Year’s holiday, the Mississippi Highway Patrol and first responders across Mississippi are committed to ensuring the safety of everyone traveling on our roadways,” DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell said. “We urge all Mississippians to celebrate responsibly by wearing seat belts, obeying traffic laws, and never driving under the influence. Let’s work together to make this a safe and joyous start to the New Year for everyone.”
Over the Christmas enforcement period, four fatal crashes were reported and more than 4,000 citations were issued to motorists statewide. Officials are hoping the numbers are much lower during the New Year travel campaign — despite the holiday being notorious for a surge in drunk driving.
“As we wrap up 2024 and gear up for the new year, it is crucial that we remain vigilant about safe travel,” MHP Lt. Colonel James Ivory said. “We are committed to establishing a solid foundation for a safe and successful 2025, and we need the public’s active participation to achieve this. It is imperative that you have a plan to ensure a safe New Year’s celebration. Together, we can ensure that we all welcome the New Year safely and joyfully.”
