After losing the Canton mayoral Democratic primary runoff on April 22 by a slim margin, Comelia Walker has been granted an inspection of the election’s ballot boxes after she alleged “significant irregularities” in the voting process.
Walker penned a letter to the Canton Democratic Municipal Executive Committee on Tuesday, claiming that “the true will of the voters could not be determined due to significant irregularities,” according to WLBT-TV.

In the letter, Walker asserted that the 3,000 Cantonians who live in newly annexed areas did not have the opportunity to vote in the election after a Madison County judge ruled they would be included on voter rolls ahead of the primary runoff. She called the alleged exclusion “voter disenfranchisement” that “materially affected the outcome of the election.”
Dr. Chuconna Anderson, Canton’s municipal clerk, says Walker will be able to inspect all ballots cast in the election on Friday in each of the eight ballot boxes used in the primary runoff.
City Alderman Tim Taylor narrowly defeated Walker by 43 votes in the April 22 runoff, clipping Walker 1,341 votes to 1,298.
General municipal elections across Mississippi are set for June 3.
