A female inmate being held in an east Mississippi facility was found dead over the weekend.
Officials with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office said the death is an apparent suicide, though an investigation will be conducted.
Facility staff found the woman unresponsive early Sunday morning and responded immediately. Though emergency procedures were promptly followed, the woman was already deceased.
Per a statement from the sheriff’s office, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will handle the investigation into the woman’s death. Her identity is yet to be released as authorities contact next of kin.
Sunday’s incident is the second reported inmate death in Mississippi this year.
