The Mississippi State baseball program and its fans are mourning the loss of Caleb Reed, a former pitcher who passed away from cancer at the age of 35.
Reed, a Cleveland native and Bayou Academy alumnus, played in Starkville from 2009-12 and was a team captain and All-SEC hurler. During his senior season, he helped the Bulldogs win a conference championship.
“We’re saddened by the passing of former All-SEC reliever Caleb Reed,” a statement from Mississippi State reads. “Caleb was an integral part of our 2011 Super Regional quad and the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship team. Our condolences to his family, friends, and teammates.”
Reed was a key piece in the Bulldog bullpen, notching 125 strikeouts with 12 saves. A star in the classroom as well, he was a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.
A GoFundMe page created for the Reed family said he was diagnosed with an “aggressive Leukemia/Lymphoma cancer” in May. He was a husband and father of three children.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced at this time.
