Operators of American Medical Response, or AMR, ambulances in central Mississippi have begun utilizing artificial intelligence while on the road.
Global Medical Response, the nation’s leading provider of emergency medical services and AMR’s parent company, has equipped the area’s ambulance fleet with AI-powered dash cameras that act as an always-alert co-pilot, aiming to protect patients, clinicians, and the communities they serve on every run.
“AMR crews already meet the industry’s highest standards in emergency driving, yet the highways they navigate grow more complex every year—heavier traffic, distracted motorists, and severe weather can all appear without warning,” said Ryan Wilson, operations manager for AMR Central Mississippi. “This technology enhances their situational awareness—so every response remains as smooth and secure as possible.”
While it’s required by law in Mississippi to yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles when they are displaying flashing lights and sounding a siren, not all passengers are compliant. To avoid collisions, the ambulances now have two forward and cabin-facing cameras that use machine vision and on-board AI to scan the roadway and cab for conditions that raise risk. If the system detects a concern, like a sudden lane intrusion, it delivers an audio prompt, giving the driver a split-second advantage.
“The ability to self-correct in real time is a game changer,” said Anita Gorden, an AMR emergency medical technician in Hinds County.. “That extra layer of awareness keeps us focused on what matters most — delivering high-quality care to our patients.”
In an early launch of the new AI integration, the same technology is reported to have eliminated 100% of near-collisions and cut overall on-road risk by 60% in just three months. Nationally, there are an estimated 6,500 accidents involving ambulances each year. AMR is hoping its new technology will reverse the current data immediately.
Installation across all AMR ambulances and support vehicles in central Mississippi is underway and will be completed this summer, per officials.
