Disaster was avoided when a medical helicopter traveling from Hattiesburg to Jackson made an emergency landing on Sunday afternoon.
According to emergency management officials, medical response company Rescue 7 was transporting a patient when the air ambulance began having mechanical issues. The pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in Smith County near SCR 57.
“All crew members and the patient are safe, and no injuries are reported,” a social media post from Smith County Emergency Management reads. “Great teamwork from all agencies involved.”
After the emergency landing, the patient was picked up by the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s AirCare service and transported to Jackson for treatment.
Responding agencies included Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Mize Volunteer Fire Department, Sylvarena Volunteer Fire Department, American Medical Response, and first responders from Covington County.
A separate incident in March saw a medical helicopter crash in Canton and kill three people.
