The local community is stepping up to help a Rankin County sheriff’s deputy injured in a car crash.
An online fundraiser called “Help Jalan Parker Heal and Rebuild” was recently set up for Parker, who is expected to miss more than three months of work after having to undergo surgery on his left hip. As of Tuesday morning, over $4,400 had been raised to cover medical and basic-life costs for Parker and his fiancé.
“All funds will go directly to him and his fiancé for food, basic life, and medical expenses while he is out of work during this time,” wrote Toni Sumrall, who set up the GoFundMe. Its fundraising goal is set at $5,500.
During the early-morning hours of July 25, Parker was responding to a home invasion call in the Robinhood community with both his lights and siren activated. His vehicle collided with another, resulting in both drivers being transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in nearby Jackson.

While the Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash, both Parker and the other driver identified as Uguster Jones were successfully treated for their injuries.
Upon being discharged from UMMC, Parker will be transferred to Methodist Rehabilitation Center where he will work to regain strength and mobility in his hip.
