Farmer’s markets across Mississippi are celebrating National Farmers Market Week with plenty of fresh produce and handmade products available to residents for purchase.
Being an agriculture-driven state, Mississippi is home to nearly 90 farmers markets with the Department of Agriculture offering this friendly tool to find fruit and veggie stands near you. While most residents do have an option near their home, here are a handful of farmers markets we know are worth checking out.
Jackson
The Mississippi Farmers Market is taking full advantage of the national celebration with its inaugural “Great American Farmers Market” on Saturday, Aug. 9. The special event will be held in coordination with the America250 campaign and go from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“Farmers markets are the backbone of local economies and community growth,” Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson said. “The Great American Farmers Market initiative shines a light on the essential role of farmers and agriculture, which remains Mississippi’s largest industry.
“Our farmers provide the food, fiber, and shelter needed by all, and our farmers markets provide a meeting place for those from all walks of life to come together. I invite everyone to come out and join us at the Mississippi Farmers Market this Saturday to celebrate our great nation’s upcoming anniversary and our rich, agricultural heritage.”
The Great American Farmers Market event at the Mississippi Farmers Market will include the usual vendors and more, educational opportunities like garden demonstrations, and a kids’ corner with face-painting, chalk art, and games. Miss Rodeo Mississippi Sierra Greene and Miss Mississippi Watermelon Queen Kaelyn Hollingsworth, among others, will also make special appearances.
The Mississippi Farmers Market is located at 929 High Street, adjacent to the Mississippi Fairgrounds.
Tupelo
If you can’t make it to Jackson for the big event, Tupelo’s weekly farmers market is a great option. With a new home at The Depot on North Front Street, the market runs every Saturday until Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. until noon.
The market offers “Four Hours of Fresh” with 32 local vendors selling products like produce, baked and canned goods, honey, plants, flowers, and handmade crats. As a producers-only market, it directly supports local farmers and artisans while serving a lively community gathering in downtown Tupelo. Live music can be found at the weekly market, as well.
Ocean Springs
Ocean Springs Fresh Market is a popular option for coastal residents, running at the L&N Depot Plaza on Washington Avenue every Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Rain or shine, the market happens no matter what.
The market brings together local farmers and artisans offering everything from seasonal fruits and vegetables to baked goods, honey, cheese, plants, and handmade crafts. Designed to capture the ambience of European food and plant markets, this marketplace fosters community by connecting neighbors through food, conversation, and a touch of smalltown charm.
Whether it’s Jackson, Tupelo, Ocean Springs, or any of the other great markets that set up shop in Mississippi, there are plenty of places to support your local farmers. So, grab a bag, bring a friend, and go be part of the experience.
