The discovery of a hand grenade resulted in law enforcement responding to a residence in the Cleary community on Thursday morning.
According to a release from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, the agency’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams responded to the home on Margaret Lane and confirmed the device was live.
Officials believe it had been stored by a now-deceased veteran who previously lived at the residence.
EOD teams safely removed the grenade, which was then detonated at a secure location.
No evacuations were necessary, and no one was hurt.
Authorities urge the public to contact law enforcement immediately if they find any old explosives or military items, especially when clearing out estates.
