An investigation is underway after an officer-involved shooting left one dead in DeSoto County.
According to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, deputies with the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office received a noise complaint just after midnight Sunday at a residence on Bankston Road in Nesbit. Upon arriving, deputies were approached by a group of individuals who advised them that a subject had been discharging a weapon.
Deputies were able to locate the subject fleeing into a wooded area. The subject later came out of the wooded area and displayed a handgun towards the deputies resulting in the deputies discharging their weapons at the subject, per DPS. The subject received fatal injuries. No deputies were injured during the encounter.
The subject was identified as 18-year-old Rylee James Westmoreland.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assessing the incident and gathering evidence. All findings will then be turned over to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
