A former assistant band director at Oak Grove High School has been arrested and charged with sex crimes against a child.
Daniel Evan Johnson, 39, was arrested Thursday afternoon following a nearly month-long investigation by the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation began after law enforcement was made aware of inappropriate messages sent from Johnson’s phone to a student’s phone.
Johnson was charged with molestation – touching a child for lustful purposes. He was booked into the Lamar County Jail and has since been released on a $50,000 bond.
The investigation into Johnson started on Nov. 10 and he was terminated by Oak Grove High School on Nov. 12.
“Our priority is, and always will be, the safety and well-being of our students,” Lamar County School District Superintendent Dr. Wesley Quick told WDAM-TV. “We work closely with our School Resource Officers, Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, the district attorney, and other law enforcement partners to ensure that any situation impacting student safeguards is addressed thoroughly and appropriately.”
Authorities said the investigation remains active, and no further details regarding potential additional charges or suspects were released.
