An Alcorn County doctor will spend 15 years in prison for his involvement in a wreck that killed an elderly man.
Michael Hawley, 45, pleaded guilty to culpable negligence manslaughter on Friday. He was handed the maximum 20-year sentence for the crime, but the judge assigned to the case suspended five of the years the defendant would be required to spend behind bars.
The incident occurred in Corinth in April 2024 and claimed the life of William Pady, 81. The Corinth Police Department reported that Hawley was going at least 60 miles per hour over the speed limit before crashing into Pady’s SUV on Highway 72. The area is listed as a 45 miles per hour zone.
Once released from prison, Hawley, who worked as an internal medicine doctor at Magnolia Regional Community Care Clinic, will serve five years of post-release supervision. He was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.
