An investigation is underway after human remains were discovered along a popular walking trail in Pontotoc over the weekend.
Law enforcement said the discovery was made Sunday afternoon on the Tanglefoot Trail, between West Eighth Street and Highway 15. Officials say the skull, along with other skeletal remains were found in a vegetated area near the trail.
“The scene was secured, and the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was requested to process the scene,” a release from the Pontotoc Police Department reads.
The remains are being sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy. At this time, the deceased has not been identified. Police have temporarily blocked off the area where the bones were found as the assessment continues.
